Washington, July 5: US President Donald Trump issued fresh remarks on Iran following the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, claiming that the United States could have targeted the country’s leadership during the ceremony but chose not to do so.
Speaking after the funeral, Trump said that if the United States had intended to do so, it could have killed the Iranian leaders who attended the opening ceremony of Khamenei’s funeral.
He claimed that such action was not taken because there would have been no leadership left to negotiate with.
Trump also said the United States had the capability to eliminate Iran’s remaining leadership but added that it had no intention of doing so.
Commenting on the funeral, Trump expressed surprise at the large number of mourners who attended and were seen grieving.
He said he had previously believed that many Iranians opposed Khamenei. Referring to the public mourning, Trump remarked that he believed some of the displays of grief were not genuine.
The Iranian government had not officially responded to Trump’s latest remarks at the time of publication.
