Hyderabad, Sept. 5: The Maharashtra unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has announced guidelines seeking to restrict Muslim participation in Garba and Dandiya events during this year’s Navratri celebrations across the state.
According to the VHP, event organisers have been asked to verify the Aadhaar cards of participants at entry points. It has also called for a tilak to be applied to those entering the venues.
The organisation has further said that participants should take part in the puja before joining the celebrations.
VHP Cites Religious and Security Concerns
The VHP has defended its position by arguing that Garba is not merely a dance or entertainment activity but a religious practice associated with the worship of Goddess Durga.
The organisation has also questioned the participation of Muslims in such events, citing differences over religious practices. It additionally claimed that the guidelines are intended to prevent alleged incidents of “love jihad” at Garba events.
The decision has triggered mixed reactions. Supporters have backed the VHP’s argument that organisers should have the right to determine participation in religious events.
However, critics have opposed the proposed restrictions, arguing that such measures could deepen religious divisions in a country known for its diversity and pluralism.
The guidelines and the controversy surrounding them are expected to remain a subject of debate as Maharashtra prepares for the upcoming Navratri celebrations.
