Delhi/Hyderabad, July 9 (Maxim News): Union IT Secretary S. Krishnan has revealed that the deadline for WhatsApp ‘Username’ notices has expired today (Thursday). He clarified that there is no question of extending the deadline. WhatsApp (Meta) management will respond to the Central Government’s notices today. WhatsApp has made it clear that it will not bring the ‘Username’ feature in India until the Center gives permission. Along with WhatsApp, the Union IT Ministry has also sent notices to Telegram and Signal apps. The Central Government has expressed strong objection to the ‘Username’ feature on WhatsApp, which allows chatting without a phone number.
The IT department has warned that this new feature could lead to a huge increase in cybercrime and digital arrest scams in the country. The center has expressed concern that hiding users’ phone numbers will make it difficult to track criminals. The center has ordered Meta not to launch this feature until its government is fully satisfied. It has also issued notices to Telegram and Signal apps, which are already using the username feature. IT Secretary S. Krishnan said that some more time has been allotted for the explanation of Telegram and Signal apps.
A WhatsApp spokesperson said that they are setting up multi-layer defense systems to control cyber fraud. WhatsApp explained that they will reserve the names of celebrities and government accounts before others use them. The Center has made it clear that there will be no compromise on security as WhatsApp has more than Rs. 50 crore users in the country. It is known that the Center has also recently issued notices on Instagram ads and Telegram piracy issues. (Maxim News)
