Siddipet, July 10: Unidentified thieves allegedly stole the hundi containing more than ₹1 lakh in cash and valuables from the Mahankali Temple at Dharmaram village in Mirudoddi mandal of Siddipet district on Thursday night.
According to police, the miscreants broke into the temple, stole the hundi and vandalised the premises by damaging idols and the temple gates.
In an apparent attempt to destroy evidence, the thieves also took away the hard disks of the temple’s CCTV surveillance system, leaving investigators without digital footage of the crime.
The theft came to light on Friday morning when the temple priest arrived to open the shrine and found the gates open. He immediately alerted the police.
The priest said this was not the first such incident at the temple. About four years ago, unidentified persons allegedly stole a gold nose ring belonging to the deity. That case remains unsolved.
The Mirudoddi police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify and trace the culprits.
