Anil Menon, along with Roscosmos astronauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft. After just three hours of travel, their spacecraft successfully docked with the Prichal module of the ISS. With their arrival, the number of crew members on the space station temporarily increased to 10. Before the launch, Anil Menon responded on social media platform ‘X’, saying that he was proud to serve on behalf of the US Space Force and to go to the space station with the support of NASA and international partners.

The Yatra-74 crew on the space station, including NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams, Sophie Adenau of the European Space Agency, and Roscosmos astronauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergey Mikhayev, and Andrey Fedyayev, welcomed the new arrivals. Menon’s team will remain on the space station until April 2027. During this eight-month mission, Anil Menon will conduct several key research projects. He will work on improving the process of manufacturing semiconductor crystals in space, which are needed for high-performance computers and artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

Future space missions will also focus on performing ultrasound examinations using augmented reality (AR) and AI techniques without the need for medical assistance from the ground. In addition, changes in blood flow in a microgravity environment will be studied. Bioprinting vascular constructs will also be tested to increase understanding of the aging process. Menon, an emergency physician by profession, has been praised by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

The International Space Station, which has been the center of continuous human habitation for the past 25 years, is a platform for many scientific researches that are not possible on Earth. The experiments conducted here contribute to advances in fields such as medicine, engineering, and biology.
