Delhi/Hyderabad, July 15 (Maxim News): As the tense situation in West Asia continues, the Union Government has taken a key decision for the safety of every Indian sailor serving in the Gulf Region. The Centre has decided to separately register the details of Indian sailors on any ship in that region. It has been ordered to take steps to ensure that complete information is available on every Indian working on the ship, regardless of the flag of the country under which it is sailing.
To this end, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, has issued instructions to the Director General of Shipping. It has been suggested that a separate operational dashboard should be set up on every ship plying in the Persian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman. This dashboard will provide information such as the location of the ship, ownership, cargo details, number of crew, welfare of Indian seafarers, security situation, route of travel, port of call and available facilities.
Meanwhile, Sonowal said that India strongly condemned the attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. He said that the loss of lives of Indian sailors and injuries to others in these attacks is deeply distressing. He made it clear that such attacks on Indian sailors, who play a crucial role in the continuity of the global supply chain, are unacceptable. The minister directed the officials to increase coordination with the Indian embassies in Iran, Oman and the United Arab Emirates and the Ministry of External Affairs.
It was suggested that verified information should be collected from time to time on maritime safety, alternative ports, medical assistance, evacuation, repatriation arrangements, and the progress of the investigation. It was also directed that shipping companies, ship management companies, and recruitment agencies that have deployed Indian seafarers in the Gulf region should submit reports immediately. It was clarified that no Indian seafarer should be sent to duty without complete information, security, and necessary assistance. (Maxim News)
