Kolkata, July 16: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Koel Mallick, also known as Rukmini Mallick, resigned from the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, delivering another setback to the Mamata Banerjee-led party. She submitted her resignation to Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan, becoming the fourth TMC MP to quit the Upper House.
Her resignation follows the earlier exits of Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Prakash Chik Baraik, and Sushmita Dev, further reducing the party’s strength in the Rajya Sabha. However, the reasons behind Koel Mallick’s resignation have not been officially disclosed by either the MP or the party.
Koel Mallick was nominated by the TMC for the Rajya Sabha elections in February 2026 and was elected unopposed before taking oath in April. At the time, she thanked the party leadership and said she looked forward to serving the people of West Bengal. Her resignation less than four months into her tenure has sparked political discussion.
A leading figure in the Bengali film industry, Koel Mallick has enjoyed a successful acting career spanning more than two decades. She is known for films including Nater Guru, Shubhodrishti, Mon Mane Na, Premer Kahini, 100% Love, and Rangbaaz. She has received several honours, including Filmfare Awards Bangla, BFJA Awards, the Anandalok Puraskar, and the Mahanayak Samman conferred by the West Bengal government.
The Trinamool Congress has not yet issued an official statement on her resignation.
