HMWSSB Tanker Operators Call Off Strike After Assurance

Hyderabad, Sept. 20: HMWSSB tanker operators have withdrawn their proposed strike after receiving an assurance on their demand for higher tanker rates.

The operators also decided to continue supplying drinking water across Hyderabad. Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Managing Director K Ashok Reddy gave the assurance during a meeting on Saturday.

Presidents of three tanker owners’ associations met Ashok Reddy and explained their concerns. They pointed to a sharp rise in operating costs. They also recalled their earlier written request for a revision of the existing tanker rates.

HMWSSB Tanker Rates Under Review

Ashok Reddy responded positively to the operators request, according to an HMWSSB press release. He assured them that the proposal would go before the next Board meeting.

The Board will discuss the demand and consider approval during its next meeting. However, the final decision rests with the government. Therefore, Ashok Reddy said he would also bring the matter to the government’s attention.

Following the assurance, the tanker operators decided to withdraw their strike plan. They also agreed to maintain drinking water supplies without disruption.

The proposed strike had raised concerns about possible difficulties for residents who depend on tanker supplies. The operators decision will allow the existing tanker services to continue while the rate revision proposal moves through the official process.

The associations said rising operating costs had made it difficult to continue under the existing rates. Their earlier written representation had sought a revision to address those cost pressures.

Representatives GVG Naidu, Sampath Rao, Akbar Hussain and Imran Khan attended the meeting. Other union members and HMWSSB officials also participated.

The next Board meeting will now be important for the tanker operators demand. Until then, the existing tanker rates will remain subject to the current arrangements.

The development also highlights the role of tanker services in meeting drinking water requirements in Hyderabad. The operators decision to continue supplies keeps the service running while the authorities consider their demand.
