Hyderabad, July 21 (Maxim News): The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid on a jewellery store in Warangal and seized 7.875 kg of gold jewellery worth around ₹10 crore for allegedly violating the BIS Act, 2016 and the Central Government’s mandatory hallmarking regulations.
The inspection was carried out by the BIS Hyderabad Branch following directions from Director and Head P.V. Sreekanth. Deputy Directors K. Kavin and Vijayraj Barber led the enforcement team during the operation.
During the inspection, officials found a large quantity of gold jewellery displayed for sale without the mandatory BIS hallmark. The seized items included necklace sets, rings, chains, earrings, and other ornaments. BIS officials said the sale of such jewellery violates the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. Consequently, the department has initiated legal action against the jewellery establishment.
Speaking after the raid, BIS Hyderabad Director P.V. Sreekanth said BIS hallmarking is mandatory for gold jewellery in 13 districts of Telangana, including Warangal and Hanamkonda. He urged jewellers to sell only BIS hallmarked jewellery carrying a valid Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number and to strictly comply with the provisions of the BIS Act.
He also advised consumers to purchase only BIS hallmarked gold jewellery with a valid HUID. Before buying jewellery, customers should verify the HUID through the BIS CARE mobile application and always insist on a proper purchase bill.
Furthermore, BIS appealed to the public to report any misuse of hallmarking or the sale of jewellery without a valid HUID through the BIS CARE app. The agency said it will continue regular inspections and enforcement drives to protect consumer interests and strengthen quality and transparency in the jewellery sector.
Officials explained that every genuine BIS hallmarked gold ornament must carry the BIS logo, the Purity or Fineness Mark, and a six digit HUID. Consumers can verify the authenticity of the hallmark instantly by entering the HUID in the BIS CARE app.
BIS also advised consumers and jewellers to follow hallmarking regulations strictly. For additional information, the public can visit the BIS website or access services through the e-BIS portal. (Maxim News)
