New Delhi, July 25: An Indian national was killed after a commercial vessel came under attack while reportedly transiting Russian territorial waters in the Black Sea on July 18, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Friday.
The incident comes days after the MEA confirmed that four Indian nationals were among those killed in a separate attack on another commercial vessel on July 19.
In a statement, the MEA said the commercial vessel MV OMORFI was attacked while sailing through the Black Sea.
According to the ministry, there were 10 crew members on board, including three Indian nationals.
“One Indian national tragically lost his life in the attack,” the MEA said, expressing condolences to the bereaved family. The ministry added that the other two Indian crew members are safe.
The MEA said the Indian Embassy in Russia has contacted the relevant authorities and is making every effort to provide all possible assistance to the deceased crew member’s family.
CCondemning the incident, the MEA said attacks targeting commercial shipping and endangering innocent civilian crew members are unacceptable.
The ministry expressed concern over growing threats to the freedom of navigation and international maritime commerce and urged all concerned parties to fulfil their international obligations to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation and the uninterrupted movement of global trade.
Earlier this week, India summoned the Russian Charge d’Affaires following the killing of four Indian nationals in a separate attack on the commercial vessel MV Golden Leo on July 19.
