New Delhi, July 25: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday extended support to students protesting over the alleged examination paper leaks and irregularities, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After meeting students observing a hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Gandhi said the protesters would continue their agitation despite alleged detentions and administrative pressure.
Addressing reporters, Rahul Gandhi said the students had placed three non-negotiable demands before the Central government:
- Resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
- Action against those responsible for the alleged police lathi-charge on protesters.
- A public apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Gandhi alleged that Pradhan should be removed from the Union Cabinet, claiming the Education Minister had failed to protect the interests of students.
“There is going to be no conversation of Mr Dharmendra Pradhan being moved anywhere. Mr Dharmendra Pradhan has to be sacked. Period,” he said.
The Congress leader also criticised the police action during the protests, alleging that many students sustained injuries.
He called for accountability against those responsible for the alleged use of force on protesters and said those involved should face action.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi said the Prime Minister should apologise to students over the handling of the alleged examination irregularities.
He also alleged that the future of students had been adversely affected by the controversy.
Rahul Gandhi also reacted to advisories issued by several universities, including Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University, cautioning students against participating in the protests.
He alleged that attempts were being made to discourage students from continuing their agitation and urged them not to be intimidated by administrative action or threats.
Gandhi asserted that the students would continue their protest despite any attempts to stop them.
