London, July 25: Three Indian origin Labour MPs have secured key positions in the new British government after Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced his Cabinet. Kanishka Narayan, Satvir Kaur, and Harpreet Uppal have received important appointments in the new administration.
Kanishka Narayan has joined the Cabinet as Britain’s first Minister for Artificial Intelligence. He was born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, before his family moved to Wales. At the age of 12, he relocated to London. He studied at Eton College, the University of Oxford, and Stanford University.
He represents the Glamorgan constituency and previously served in the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology.
Meanwhile, Satvir Kaur has been appointed Minister of State in the Ministry for Equalities and also serves as a minister in the Home Office. She became the MP for Southampton in July 2024. Her parents migrated from Punjab and ran a saree shop in Southampton.
Earlier, she worked as a Parliamentary Private Secretary. She was on maternity leave between September 2025 and February 2026.
Harpreet Uppal, the MP for Huddersfield, has been appointed Assistant Whip. She will oversee parliamentary business and issue voting instructions to Labour MPs. Previously, she worked with Andy Burnham during his Greater Manchester mayoral campaign.
In addition, Uma Kumaran, a British MP of Sri Lankan Tamil origin, has been appointed as a junior minister in the Foreign Office.
Former ministers Seema Malhotra and Preet Kaur Gill, who served under former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have returned to the back benches following the Cabinet reshuffle.
