Japan, July 28: A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu on Tuesday, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) to issue a tsunami advisory for coastal areas.
According to the JMA, the earthquake struck at 4.29 pm local time at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the sea surface.
The epicentre was located in the western region of Kumamoto on Kyushu island, about 900 kilometres southwest of Tokyo.
Authorities said there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage following the earthquake.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory as a precaution after the strong tremor.
Meanwhile, the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no threat of a tsunami beyond local coastal areas.
Officials are continuing to monitor the situation, while emergency authorities remain on alert for possible aftershocks.
