Internet/Hyderabad, Aug 20 (Maxim News):Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar (80), who is serving a life sentence in the anti-Sikh riots case that followed the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has passed away. He was taken to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Thursday, where doctors declared him dead. The hospital authorities are yet to reveal the cause of Sajjan’s death.
It is known that former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards in 1984. After that, there were large-scale mob attacks on Sikhs in many parts of the north, including Delhi. Sajjan Kumar was found guilty in some of these cases. In these attacks, Sikh businesses and residential areas were attacked. Many people died. According to official figures, more than 3,000 people died in the attacks.
The Delhi High Court convicted Sajjan Kumar in 2018 in the murder of five people in the Palam Colony area. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Later, the Delhi High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment in 2025 in the murder of two Sikhs in Delhi’s Saraswat Nagar. However, in the case of the violent incidents in Delhi’s Janakpuri and Vikaspuri areas, Sajjan was acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence to prove his role.
Sajjan Kumar, a key Jat leader, played a prominent role in Delhi politics in the 1980s. He started his career as a local councillor in 1977 and later won three terms as an MP from the Outer Delhi constituency.(Maxim News)
