Hyderabad, August 25: The Telangana government is preparing for the next phase of municipal elections, with GHMC and Warangal among the key civic bodies likely to go to polls.

The government is considering December as a possible window for the elections. The exercise may also cover other municipalities where polling did not take place earlier.

Officials in the Municipal Administration Department have started reviewing election related preparations. However, the government has not yet announced the final schedule.

Civic poll plans take shape after municipal reorganisation

Telangana held elections for 116 municipalities and seven corporations in February. However, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Warangal and Khammam did not go to polls because their terms had not ended.

Elections were also deferred in Mandamarri, Manuguru, Achampet, Nakrekal, Kothur and Siddipet for different reasons.

The GHMC term ended on February 10. The government subsequently reorganised the Hyderabad civic administration into three corporations.

Hyderabad remained a separate corporation. The government also created the Malkajgiri and Cyberabad corporations by bringing several adjoining areas under separate civic administrations.

The reorganisation affected the timeline for municipal elections. Authorities now need to complete delimitation, administrative arrangements and other preparatory work for the restructured civic bodies.

Meanwhile, the Special Intensive Revision process remains a major focus for officials. The exercise is expected to conclude by October 19.

The government may consider municipal elections after the revision process ends. Officials could then get additional time to complete administrative preparations before polling in December.

Weather conditions may also influence the final decision. The government is expected to consider voter convenience and administrative readiness while deciding the polling dates.

The State Election Commission will have a key role in finalising the election programme. The government is yet to issue an official notification on the proposed schedule.

The upcoming polls could carry political significance because Hyderabad and Warangal remain among Telangana’s major urban centres. The results could also shape the political landscape ahead of the next Assembly elections.

For now, December remains a likely window under consideration. The final dates and election schedule will become clear only after the government and election authorities take a formal decision.
