Hyderabad, August 31 (Maxim News): The Telangana government has filed an appeal in the High Court challenging the stay imposed on the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes.
A single judge had earlier stayed the implementation of the two schemes. The government has now challenged that order before a bench headed by the Chief Justice.
The division bench heard detailed arguments on Monday on whether the government’s appeal was maintainable. Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy presented arguments on behalf of the state government.
He told the court that Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak provide financial support to brides from poor families. He also said the schemes help the state work towards eliminating child marriages.
The Advocate General argued that the petition filed before the single judge was not maintainable. He therefore asked the division bench to dismiss the original petition challenging the legality of the two schemes.
High Court Adjourns Further Hearing
The state government maintained that the schemes serve an important social purpose. The government also stressed their role in supporting economically weaker families during marriage.
The AG reminded the bench that the single judge had earlier ordered a stay on the implementation of the schemes. He argued that the original challenge itself did not qualify for consideration.
The Chief Justice led bench heard the government’s submissions in detail. However, the court did not conclude the matter on Monday.
The bench adjourned the next hearing until Tuesday. Further arguments are expected when the case comes up again.
The outcome of the appeal could determine the immediate legal position of the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes. The schemes provide financial assistance for eligible marriages in Telangana.
For now, the High Court has not issued a final ruling on the government’s appeal. The next hearing will indicate how the court proceeds with the challenge to the earlier stay order.
