New Zealand Housing Delegation Explores Partnership With Osmania University

Hyderabad, Sept. 3: A high level New Zealand housing delegation visited Osmania University to explore partnerships in housing research, sustainable construction and urban development.

The delegation was led by Ali Hamlin Paenga, Chief Executive Officer of Te Matapihi, and included Chair Jordan Robertson, economist Dr. Jay Whitehead and Naveen Maddisetty.

The visit formed part of a strategic trade delegation to India from August 26 to September 6, 2026. The delegation is seeking international partnerships to improve housing outcomes for Māori and Pacific communities in New Zealand.

New Zealand Housing Delegation Discusses Research and Innovation

The discussions focused on housing affordability, climate resilience and infrastructure. The delegation showed interest in Osmania University’s work on sustainable materials and scalable construction technologies.

The two sides also discussed water and solid waste management, smart community technologies and artificial intelligence in housing design. Digital service delivery and indigenous led research models were also explored.

The delegation highlighted the need to strengthen technical and leadership skills among rangatahi, or young leaders, in New Zealand. It also identified potential for student and research exchange programmes with Osmania University.

The delegation said Indian innovations in cost effective housing could offer useful lessons for Māori and Pacific housing needs in New Zealand.

Osmania University welcomed the proposed partnership. University officials stressed the need for practical collaborations that deliver results beyond formal agreements.

Both sides agreed to identify areas of mutual expertise. They will also work towards formal university partnerships, joint research projects and technology based pilot programmes.

Ali Hamlin Paenga said India’s innovation in affordable housing, sustainability and digital transformation offers opportunities for New Zealand. She said the partnership could support Māori and Pacific communities while strengthening economic and cultural ties.

Osmania University Vice Chancellor Prof. Kumar Molugaram said the university looked forward to practical collaboration in engineering, sustainability and community focused development.

The delegation also visited the Department of Civil Engineering at the University College of Engineering. It interacted with faculty members and research scholars during the visit.

The engagement is expected to strengthen India New Zealand ties through research, innovation, entrepreneurship and cultural exchange.
