World Packaging Day Debuts Globally On September 6

Hyderabad, Sept. 4: The world will celebrate the first World Packaging Day on September 6, 2026. The World Packaging Organisation has designated the date for the annual observance.

The date marks the anniversary of the organisation’s foundation. The initiative aims to highlight packaging’s role in food security, healthcare, trade and sustainability.

Hyderabad based packaging professional AVPS Chakravarthi, Global Ambassador of the World Packaging Organisation, shared the details. He said packaging supports global supply chains in several important ways.

Packaging protects food and medicines during storage and transport. It also reduces product losses and supports safe delivery to consumers.

Furthermore, packaging helps manufacturers reach global markets. It supports exports, e commerce, logistics and international trade.

WPO President Luciana Pellegrino has also highlighted packaging’s importance in daily life. She said packaging can help reduce losses and waste while improving safe and convenient access to products.

World Packaging Day highlights four key areas

The inaugural World Packaging Day campaign will focus on four themes. These include Packaging for Progress, Packaging Against Food Waste, Packaging and Economic Growth, and Packaging and Sustainability.

Packaging for Progress will highlight healthcare, pharmaceutical safety, product security and accessibility. It will also examine packaging’s contribution to quality of life.

Packaging Against Food Waste will focus on technologies that protect food and extend shelf life. Such solutions can help maintain food quality and reduce losses across supply chains.

Meanwhile, Packaging and Sustainability will focus on circular economy practices and eco design. The campaign will also highlight recyclability, lightweight packaging and mono material solutions.

Chakravarthi said the initiative will encourage strong local participation across the world. Packaging associations, manufacturers, converters and machinery companies can organise activities.

Educational institutions, brands and material innovators can also participate. Activities may include technical seminars, factory visits, design competitions and student programmes.

Academic lectures, innovation showcases and digital campaigns will also form part of the global movement. Policymakers, retailers, researchers, NGOs and consumers can join these discussions.

For India, the observance offers an opportunity to showcase its expanding packaging ecosystem. Indian companies can highlight advances in materials, printing, converting, machinery and product protection.

The industry can also demonstrate its contribution to food security, healthcare and employment. It can further highlight its role in exports and consumer welfare.

The campaign encourages participants to share events and innovations through social media. Organisers can use the hashtag #WorldPackagingDay to support the global campaign.

The initiative also seeks to broaden the public discussion about packaging waste. It recognises that responsible waste management remains important.

At the same time, the WPO wants greater focus on packaging’s full lifecycle benefits. These include preventing food spoilage, protecting medicines and supporting modern trade.

World Packaging Day 2026 will therefore provide a global platform for the sector. It will promote collaboration for safer, more innovative and sustainable packaging solutions.
