Hyderabad, Sept. 10 (Maxim News): Banks may face service disruptions on September 11 as banking unions have called a nationwide strike.
The strike coincides with the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi. However, the BRICS summit itself has not declared September 11 a bank holiday.
The Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar does not list September 11 as a bank holiday in Delhi. Therefore, bank branches in the national capital are not officially closed because of the summit.
However, customers could still face disruptions because the United Forum of Bank Unions has called a nationwide strike. The forum represents more than 90 percent of the banking workforce, according to the report.
The unions are demanding a five day banking week. They are also protesting over the revised Performance Linked Incentive scheme and other unresolved issues.
Several major banks have warned customers about possible disruptions. State Bank of India said it had made arrangements for normal operations. However, it also warned that work could still face an impact.
Punjab National Bank, UCO Bank, Indian Bank and Bank of Maharashtra have also issued customer advisories. These banks have warned that branch and office operations could face disruptions on September 11.
Bank Strike Could Disrupt Branch Services
The strike remains separate from the RBI’s official holiday calendar. Therefore, customers should not treat September 11 as a regular bank holiday across India.
In Rajasthan, however, September 11 is an official bank holiday. Branches in Jaipur will remain closed because of elections in the jurisdiction of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation.
Gujarat could also face extended disruption. The Maha Gujarat Bank Employees’ Association has called a separate strike from September 11 to 13.
The timing could affect banking services for three consecutive days in parts of Gujarat. September 12 falls on the second Saturday, while September 13 is a Sunday.
Meanwhile, digital banking services are expected to remain available for routine transactions. Customers can use UPI, internet banking, mobile banking and ATMs, subject to technical maintenance or other service interruptions.
The BRICS summit will also bring major security and traffic restrictions to New Delhi. The 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit is scheduled in the capital from September 11 to 13.
Other bank holidays will follow later in September. Several states will observe holidays on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi and related festivals.
Therefore, customers planning branch visits on September 11 should check their bank’s latest advisory. Those requiring cash services, cheque processing or other branch based work may want to complete them in advance.
The situation could vary between banks and regions. Customers should therefore distinguish between an official bank holiday and strike related disruption. (Maxim News)
