Hyderabad, Sept. 16: Rising onion prices are putting additional pressure on household budgets as prices have increased sharply in recent days.
Good-quality onions are now selling for Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kg in the market.
Around 10 days ago, onions were available at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg. The latest increase has left consumers, particularly homemakers, worried about rising grocery expenses.
Onions are among the most commonly used vegetables in Indian kitchens. However, the sharp price rise is now forcing families to reconsider their purchases. Consumers visiting vegetable markets are facing higher prices compared with recent weeks.
Onion prices put pressure on households and hotels
Traders attribute the rise in onion prices to weather conditions. The increase comes as families are already dealing with higher expenses for vegetables, pulses, cooking oil and other essential commodities.
The impact is also being felt by hotels and eateries, where onions are widely used in cooking. Some hotels have reportedly reduced the quantity of onions served with meals following the price increase.
In some places, customers are being told that onions are out of stock. A few hotels have also started charging customers extra for onions.
Consumers said onions were earlier served free with meals at many hotels. They now face additional charges for the same item in some establishments.
Meanwhile, onion prices have become a major talking point in vegetable markets. Some consumers are reportedly stepping back after checking the latest prices, adding to concerns over the impact of rising onion costs on household budgets. (Maxim News)
