Delhi/Hyderabad, Sept 19 (Maxim News): India is attracting strong interest from global and domestic companies seeking to invest in the semiconductor sector, IT Secretary S. Krishnan said on Saturday.
Speaking on the sidelines of SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi, Krishnan said India accounts for nearly 20% of the global semiconductor design workforce. He said the government is placing strong emphasis on developing skilled talent, with an ongoing programme aimed at training around 85,000 design engineers.
“In the chip design domain, a massive talent pool is already skilled,” Krishnan said.
He said skill development would remain a priority across the semiconductor ecosystem, with particular attention to manufacturing. The government, he added, would carefully assess investment proposals received during SEMICON India because significant public funds would be involved in providing incentives.
Policy Support and Talent Pool Drive Semiconductor Investment
Krishnan said several major Indian and multinational companies were keen to invest in India’s semiconductor industry. He attributed the growing interest to confidence in India’s skilled workforce and the stability and policy support offered by the government.
“Because of these reasons, a large number of companies and investors want to enter India and invest here. We will actively encourage them and work closely alongside them,” he said.
Ashok Chandak, president of SEMI India-IESA, said SEMICON India had attracted strong participation from visitors, including students and early-career engineers. He said the event recorded 12,000 visitors on the first day and 16,000 on the second day.
Chandak also highlighted participation from several Asian countries, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. Visitors from the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand also attended the event, reflecting interest in collaboration between companies and institutions in India and across Asia.
