Bank Strike September 28 to 30: SBI Issues Customer Advisory

New Delhi: Bank customers may face disruptions in branch-based services from September 28 to 30 if the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) proceeds with its proposed three-day nationwide strike.

The strike would follow the September 26 and 27 weekend holidays, potentially resulting in five consecutive days of disruption to branch services. State Bank of India (SBI) has advised customers to complete important branch-related transactions in advance.

The Finance Ministry has urged bank employees to call off the proposed strike and resolve pending issues through dialogue. However, the strike programme remains in place as of the latest reports.

Which Banking Services Will Be Available?

SBI has said it will make efforts to provide essential banking services during the strike period. Customers have been advised to use ATMs and Automated Deposit and Withdrawal Machines (ADWMs) for emergency cash withdrawals and other available services.

Customer Service Points (CSPs) are also expected to remain available. Customers should check with their respective bank for service availability, as operations may vary during the strike.

Digital banking channels can help customers carry out routine transactions without visiting a branch. These include:

  • YONO
  • Mobile banking
  • Internet banking
  • UPI
  • ATM services

However, availability of individual services can vary, and customers requiring branch-based services are advised to complete them before the proposed strike.

Why Are Bank Unions Going on Strike?

The UFBU is pressing for the implementation of a five-day banking week, along with several other demands concerning employees and pensioners.

The unions have also raised issues relating to pension updation, a uniform dearness allowance formula for pensioners and other service-related matters. The five-day banking proposal has been pending since the 2024 wage settlement, according to union representatives.

The unions have argued that an agreement in March 2024 provided for Saturdays to be declared holidays, with employees agreeing to an additional 40 minutes of working time from Monday to Friday. The proposal requires approval from the Finance Ministry.

The proposed strike also coincides with the half-yearly closing of banks on September 30, prompting the government to ask banks and unions to take steps to minimise disruption to customers.
