Hyderabad, Sept. 22: Microsoft has launched its fourth cloud region in India in Hyderabad, expanding its infrastructure for cloud and artificial intelligence workloads.
Called India South Central, the new region is positioned as a strategic hub for Asia and the Global South. It features a three-zone architecture designed to support resilience and future expansion.
The region is part of Microsoft’s $20.5 billion investment commitment in India. It is already live, with additional Azure and AI services planned over the coming months.
Puneet Chandok, President of Microsoft India and South Asia, said India South Central was built for advanced AI workloads and regional expansion.
Organisations including Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank and PB Pay have already signed up for the new region, according to Microsoft.
Hyderabad Cloud Region Focuses on AI and Sustainability
A key feature of the Hyderabad facility is its cooling system. Microsoft said the region uses effectively zero water for cooling through high-efficiency mechanical systems. The approach supports its goal of becoming carbon negative, water positive and zero waste by 2030.
The new region also expands Microsoft’s sovereign public cloud capabilities in India. It provides local capacity, data residency options, Availability Zones and governance features for eligible workloads.
These capabilities are designed to help organisations address applicable security, compliance and data protection requirements, including sector-specific requirements.
Microsoft is also supporting regional connectivity through the planned 3,600-km India-Southeast Asia (I-2SEA) submarine cable system. The system will connect India with Malaysia and Singapore, with planned landing points at Machilipatnam and South Chennai. It is targeted for service in 2029.
In Telangana, Microsoft’s Data Center Academy is being delivered with Young India Skills University and the Telangana government. The programme is designed to train students in datacenter operations and infrastructure management.
Microsoft said more than 10 million Indians have already received AI skills training. The company is targeting 20 million people by 2030.
