Hyderabad, Sept. 22: BRS working president KT Rama Rao (KTR) sought Rs 25 lakh ex gratia for families of infants who died in the RIMS fire in Adilabad.
Rama Rao expressed shock over the deaths and sought specialised medical care for other affected newborns.
The fire broke out at the Special Newborn Care Unit of RIMS Adilabad late Monday night. Reports said an electrical fault involving an air conditioning unit triggered the blaze.
The number of infant deaths later rose to three, according to reports. Other newborns were evacuated and shifted to different hospitals for treatment.
KTR Seeks Action After RIMS Fire
In a statement, Rama Rao alleged that the incident exposed lapses in the maintenance and monitoring of government hospitals.
He claimed BRS leaders had repeatedly raised concerns about conditions at RIMS Adilabad. He alleged that the government failed to take corrective measures.
Rama Rao also held Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy responsible for the incident and criticised the government’s handling of public healthcare. These were political allegations made by the BRS leader.
He urged the government to ensure specialised treatment for the surviving newborns.
Rama Rao also called for expert inspections of children’s wards and intensive care units at RIMS Adilabad and other government hospitals.
He said preventive measures should be taken to improve safety in critical care facilities.
Meanwhile, authorities have ordered an inquiry into the fire and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials have also focused on the treatment and safety of the affected newborns.
