Veg And Non Veg Marks | Hyderabad, Sept. 22: The Centre has amended packaging rules for soaps, shampoos, toothpastes and other cosmetics and toiletries.
Under the amended Legal Metrology rules, packages must display a colour-coded mark indicating whether the product is of vegetarian or non-vegetarian origin.
The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Fourth Amendment Rules, 2026 were notified on September 21 and came into force upon publication in the Official Gazette.
Veg And Non Veg Marks | New Packaging Rules for Cosmetic Products
The amended rules require a green dot for products of vegetarian origin.
Products of non-vegetarian origin must carry a red or brown dot. The mark must appear at the top of the principal display panel of the package.
However, the requirement itself dates back to a 2014 amendment to the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. That provision came into force on July 1, 2014.
The latest amendment changes the placement of the requirement within Rule 6. It inserts the provision under sub-rule 4A and removes the earlier sub-rule 8.
The colour marking allows consumers to identify the declared origin of the product without relying only on the ingredient list.
The amendment covers soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, cosmetics and toiletries.
