Hyderabad, Sept. 22: Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao was detained by police while he was travelling to the Jurala irrigation project on Tuesday.
Rao was heading to Jurala along with BJP leaders to express support for farmers protesting for irrigation water.
Farmers have been demanding water from the project to protect crops in the Jurala ayacut. Police have deployed additional forces around the project amid the protests.
BJP Chief Questions Detention Over Jurala Farmers’ Protest
Following his detention, Rao criticised the Congress led state government over the farmers’ concerns.
He questioned the detention of political leaders seeking to meet farmers and assess their problems.
BJP leaders also criticised the police action and demanded that the government address the farmers’ irrigation concerns.
Meanwhile, protests around Jurala have continued for several days. Farmers had earlier opened the head regulator and released water into the Left Canal before irrigation officials stopped the release.
The BJP said farmers should be allowed to raise their concerns and warned that it would intensify its agitation in support of the Jurala protesters.
Police have also detained or placed several BRS leaders under house arrest in connection with protests over water release.
