Jurala Water Release: Hyderabad, Sept. 23: The Telangana government has ordered the release of irrigation water from the Priyadarshini Jurala Project to protect standing crops in the erstwhile Mahabubnagar district.
Minister Vakiti Srihari directed irrigation officials to release water to the project’s command area while ensuring that drinking water requirements are not affected.
The decision came amid protests by farmers seeking irrigation water for crops that have reached a crucial stage. The government has also sought additional Krishna water from upstream Karnataka projects.
Following the government’s directions and fresh inflows, officials released water into the Jurala right canal early Wednesday. It is reported that the project recorded around 2,687 cusecs of inflow, allowing officials to release water to the command area.
Jurala water release | Karnataka Asked to Release More Water
Telangana Ministers Vakiti Srihari and Jupally Krishna Rao, along with MLAs from the region, met Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
The Telangana delegation requested Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of Krishna water daily for 30 days to support irrigation and drinking water needs in the Palamuru region.
According to reports, the Karnataka Chief Minister assured the delegation that around 7 TMC of water would be released to the Jurala Project at a rate of 5,000 cusecs per day for 30 days.
Minister Srihari said the government’s priority was to protect farmers while safeguarding drinking water requirements. He said decisions on water releases were being taken after considering storage levels, rainfall, inflows from Karnataka and future requirements.
Officials have urged farmers to use the available irrigation water carefully and avoid wastage. The government is also monitoring inflows from upstream projects as it works to meet the irrigation needs of the Jurala command area.
