Hyderabad: A spell of rain accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms disrupted traffic in several parts of Hyderabad on Tuesday, with waterlogging reported at some locations. The showers provided relief from the recent heat but affected vehicular movement across the city.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of intense rainfall across Telangana as a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal moves towards the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts.
The system was located about 180 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam and was expected to cross the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts near Kalingapatnam as a deep depression by the night of September 23.
The weather system is likely to bring widespread rainfall to Telangana. The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rain on September 23 and 24, followed by very heavy rain on September 25 and 26. Thunderstorms, lightning and strong surface winds are also expected.
Revanth Reddy Directs Officials to Remain Alert
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed officials to remain alert and take measures to prevent inconvenience to the public following the heavy rain.
He instructed the commissioners of the three municipal corporations in the Greater Hyderabad region, HYDRAA and police commissioners to coordinate closely and monitor the situation.
Officials were directed to take immediate steps to prevent waterlogging on main roads, junctions and in residential colonies. The government also asked departments to deploy personnel and machinery in affected areas and keep rescue teams ready.
HYDRAA Disaster Response Force teams were placed on alert and cleared waterlogging, blocked drains and fallen trees at several locations after Tuesday’s rain. Around one foot of water accumulated at the Secunderabad Clock Tower underpass, where teams used pumps to clear the water.
Traffic police also reported slow movement at several stretches, including parts of Secunderabad, Begumpet, Ameerpet and the Hitec City-Gachibowli corridor. Commuters were advised to exercise caution as further rain is expected.
