Rohit Kohli ODI milestones | Thiruvananthapuram: India’s ODI veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will return to action against West Indies on Sunday, with several major milestones in sight.
The first ODI of the three-match series will be played at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The series is also an important phase in India’s preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
Both batters have outstanding ODI records against West Indies. Kohli has scored 2,261 runs in 43 ODIs against them at an average of 66.50, with nine centuries and 11 fifties. Rohit has 1,613 runs in 37 matches at 57.60, including three centuries and 12 fifties.

Kohli needs only 59 runs to become the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to score 15,000 ODI runs.
He has accumulated 14,941 runs in 314 ODIs at an average of 58.59. His tally includes 54 centuries and 79 fifties, with a highest score of 183.
If Kohli reaches the landmark during the series, he will also become the fastest player to 15,000 ODI runs.
The countdown towards the 100-century landmark will also continue. Kohli currently has 85 international centuries. He has scored nine ODI hundreds against West Indies and could add to that tally during the series.
Thiruvananthapuram has been a productive venue for Kohli. In two ODIs at the venue, he has scored 199 runs without being dismissed. His most memorable innings came against Sri Lanka in January 2023, when he smashed an unbeaten 166 from 110 balls, including 13 fours and eight sixes.
Kohli has another major target in List A cricket. He has 59 centuries and needs two more to move past Tendulkar’s record of 60.
He is also closing in on Tendulkar’s record for international centuries at home. Kohli has 41 and needs two more to surpass Tendulkar’s 42.
The former India captain is within reach of another Tendulkar record in home ODIs. Tendulkar scored 6,976 ODI runs at home, while Kohli has 6,867 and needs 110 more to move ahead.
Kohli also needs 271 international runs to surpass the current mark for most international runs against West Indies. A further 142 runs in victories would put him at the top for runs against West Indies in winning matches.
He is also 180 runs away from becoming the first batter to score 13,000 ODI runs while batting at No. 3.
In addition, Kohli needs 215 international runs in Asia to reach 17,000 runs in the region. Other records are also within reach, including those involving 50-plus scores in winning matches and 50-plus scores at a strike rate above 100.
In six ODI innings this year, Kohli has scored 384 runs at an average of 64, including one century and three fifties.
Rohit Closes in on 12,000 ODI Runs
Rohit Sharma has several significant milestones of his own.
The opener needs 105 runs to become the third Indian batter to reach 12,000 ODI runs, following Tendulkar and Kohli.
Rohit has scored 11,895 runs in 288 ODIs at an average of 48.95. His record includes 34 centuries and a world-record ODI score of 264.
He is also 135 runs away from becoming only the fourth opener to score 10,000 ODI runs. Tendulkar is the only Indian opener to have reached that mark.
Tendulkar finished with 15,310 ODI runs as an opener. Rohit currently has 9,865 runs in 201 matches as an opener, averaging 54.5.
Rohit’s record against West Indies provides another major storyline. He needs 185 runs to move to the top for ODI runs by an opener against the Caribbean side.
He is also within reach of several other records against West Indies. Six more sixes would move him to the top for ODI sixes in the fixture, while 12 more international sixes would take him to 100 against the West Indies.
Rohit also needs 18 fours to reach 2,000 international fours.
In nine ODI innings this year, Rohit has scored 379 runs at an average of 42.11 and a strike rate of 99.21. His latest ODI innings was a 138 against England at Lord’s.
Jadeja Also Eyes India-West Indies ODI Record
The milestone chase extends beyond India’s two senior batters.
Ravindra Jadeja currently shares the record for most wickets in India-West Indies ODI history with former West Indies pacer Courtney Walsh.
Both bowlers have taken 44 wickets in the fixture. Jadeja has reached the tally in 32 matches, while Walsh took 44 wickets in 38 games.
One wicket in the series would give Jadeja the outright record for most wickets in India-West Indies ODIs.
With Kohli needing 59 runs for 15,000 ODI runs, Rohit 105 for 12,000 and Jadeja just one wicket for the head-to-head bowling record, the opening ODI in Thiruvananthapuram carries several individual milestones.
The three-match series will continue in Guwahati on September 30 before the final ODI in New Chandigarh on October 3.
