UIDAI Revises Aadhaar Name Change Rules: Documents Required

Hyderabad, Oct 5: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has revised the procedure for changing or correcting names on Aadhaar cards. The updated guidelines specify different documentation requirements based on the type of name change.

UIDAI issued a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on September 18, 2026, replacing the earlier procedure from 2021. The guidelines cover spelling corrections, data-entry errors, changes following marriage or divorce, and complete name changes.

The revised process aims to improve document verification and ensure consistency in Aadhaar records. Applicants must provide supporting documents appropriate to the change they are requesting.

Aadhaar Name Change: Documents Required Under New Rules

Under the revised guidelines, applicants seeking to change their names after marriage or divorce may need to submit the relevant affidavit and supporting documents. The precise requirements depend on the nature of the change and the documents available.

For corrections involving data-entry mistakes or spelling errors, applicants must provide acceptable documents supporting the correct name. Changes involving transliteration from English into a regional language may also require supporting documentation under the applicable procedure.

Applicants seeking a complete name change must follow UIDAI’s prescribed process. The existing UIDAI guidance requires a Gazette notification showing the new name and an old proof-of-identity document containing the previous name. Additional documents may be required depending on the case.

The rules also distinguish between name changes for minors and adults. Parents or legal guardians may need to provide the relevant birth certificate or guardianship documents for eligible updates involving children.

UIDAI requires applicants to ensure that the information in their supporting documents is accurate and verifiable. The name recorded in an accepted document may be reflected in Aadhaar according to the applicable update rules.

Applicants should check the latest instructions on the official UIDAI website before visiting an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre. Requirements can vary depending on whether the request involves a minor correction, a change in surname, or a complete name change.
