Hyderabad Doctor | Hyderabad, Oct. 11: Dr. Santosh G. Honavar, a Hyderabad based ocular oncologist, has topped the Stanford–Elsevier list of Indian ophthalmology researchers for the fifth consecutive year. He also leads the rankings for career long research impact in ophthalmology.
Dr. Honavar serves as Honorary Secretary of the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS). He is Director of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery and Ocular Oncology at Centre for Sight Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, and a former Associate Director of LV Prasad Eye Institute.

The 2026 Stanford–Elsevier list features 64 Indian ophthalmologists among the world’s top 2% of researchers based on their research impact in the latest annual assessment. Of these, 29 are recognised for career long impact.
The top 10 Indian ophthalmology researchers in the 2026 list are Dr. Santosh G. Honavar, Dr. Mohd Javed Ali, Dr. Kaliki Swathi, Dr. Namrata Sharma, Dr. Virender S. Sangwan, Dr. Vinod Kumar, Dr. GVS Murthy, Dr. Rohit Shetty, Dr. Savitri Sharma and Dr. Rajeev Raman.

The career long impact list includes Dr. Santosh G. Honavar, Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, Dr. Virender S. Sangwan, Dr. Philip Aloysius Thomas, Dr. Savitri Sharma, Dr. Muthiah K. Srinivasan, Dr. Mohd Javed Ali, Dr. D. Balasubramanian, Dr. GVS Murthy and Dr. Amod Gupta.
Researchers on the list represent leading institutions across India. These include LV Prasad Eye Institute and Centre for Sight in Hyderabad, AIIMS in New Delhi, Sankara Nethralaya in Chennai, Aravind Eye Care System in Madurai, Narayana Nethralaya in Bengaluru and PGIMER in Chandigarh.
Dr. Honavar specialises in eye cancers and has received several professional honours, including the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award from the Government of India. He is the only ophthalmologist from the Indian subcontinent to receive an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom, according to the announcement. He has more than 18,500 citations and an H-index of 73.
The Stanford–Elsevier World’s Top 2% Scientists List recognises researchers based on the scholarly impact of their published work. The 2026 rankings cover both annual research impact and cumulative career impact.
According to the announcement, 6,954 Indian researchers were recognised for their impact during the latest annual assessment, while 3,898 were recognised for their cumulative career impact.
AIOS President Dr. Jeewan S. Titiyal congratulated the Indian researchers included in the rankings. He highlighted the society’s research initiatives, scientific activities and journals, including the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology and IJO Case Reports.
Titiyal said AIOS aims to strengthen Indian ophthalmology research through its Vision 2030 strategy. He also expressed hope that more young Indian ophthalmologists would earn international research recognition in the coming years.
