Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 | Hyderabad, Oct 13: The Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase 2 expansion project is gathering momentum, with the Telangana government accelerating preparations for the construction of seven proposed corridors covering a total distance of 122.9 kilometres.
The ambitious expansion project, estimated to cost ₹38,595 crore, aims to strengthen public transport connectivity across Hyderabad and its rapidly developing suburbs.
As part of the implementation process, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has initiated steps to appoint General Consultants (GCs) to supervise and coordinate construction activities on four major corridors.
The deadline for submitting consultancy tenders has been extended to October 22, 2026.
Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 | General Consultants to Oversee Four Metro Corridors
HMRL has invited consultancy bids for four important routes under the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro expansion.
- Metro Corridor Proposed Length
- Raidurg–Kokapet 11.6 km
- MGBS–Chandrayangutta 7.5 km
- LB Nagar–Hayathnagar 7.1 km
- Miyapur–Patancheru 13.4 km
- Total 39.6 km
The appointment of consultants for these four corridors is expected to help streamline project planning, technical supervision and construction coordination.
Officials believe that completing the consultancy selection process will be an important step towards accelerating the implementation of Phase 2.
What Will General Consultants Do?
The selected General Consultants will play a crucial role in managing technical and operational aspects of the Metro expansion.

They will coordinate daily with HMRL authorities, contractors and other agencies involved in the project.
Their responsibilities will include reviewing technical designs, maintaining project documentation, monitoring workflows and advising officials on challenges arising during construction.
The consultants will also provide recommendations to resolve technical difficulties and improve coordination between different project stakeholders.
All major decisions and proposals within their scope of work will require approval from the Metro authorities.
The selected consultants will be required to submit their design proposals within three months of appointment.
Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 | Only 55 Properties Await Acquisition
Significant progress has also been reported in land acquisition for the Old City Metro corridor connecting Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) with Chandrayangutta.
According to Metro officials, the number of properties required for the project has been reduced following modifications to the original alignment.
Initially, authorities identified approximately 1,400 properties for acquisition. However, after revising the route alignment, the requirement was reduced to 888 properties.
Of these, 833 properties have already been acquired, leaving only 55 properties pending.
Officials are taking steps to complete the remaining acquisitions by the end of October.
The progress is expected to facilitate further construction activities along the Old City corridor.
Tree Plantation Plan Along Old City Corridor
Environmental protection measures are also being incorporated into the Metro expansion plans.
According to Metro sources, senior officials have directed that six saplings be planted at alternative locations for every tree removed during construction along the Old City Metro corridor.
The initiative is intended to compensate for tree removal associated with infrastructure development.
Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 | Why Was the Tender Deadline Extended?
HMRL initially invited tenders for appointing General Consultants approximately two months ago.
The earlier deadline for submission was September 19. However, the authorities subsequently extended the deadline to October 22.
According to the information available, the extension followed concerns regarding the financial quotations submitted by participating firms.
The revised timeline is expected to provide additional time for the consultancy selection process.
Consultants to Be Selected Through QCBS Method
HMRL will select the General Consultants through the Quality-cum-Cost-Based Selection (QCBS) method.
Under this system, both the technical capabilities of participating firms and their financial quotations will be evaluated.
Authorities will examine the companies’ previous project experience, quality standards, technical documentation and relevant credentials.
The evaluation may also include verification of earlier projects and field inspections to assess the quality of completed work.
Officials will consider the firms’ ability to deliver reliable consultancy services alongside their quoted costs before awarding the contracts.
The QCBS approach is intended to ensure that the selected consultants meet the technical requirements of the Metro project while offering competitive financial proposals.
Hyderabad Metro Phase 2 Expansion
The proposed 122.9-kilometre Metro Phase 2 network is expected to improve connectivity between major residential, commercial and employment centres across Hyderabad.
The expansion includes routes serving rapidly growing areas such as Kokapet, Patancheru and Hayathnagar, along with the long-awaited Metro connection through the Old City.
The Old City corridor is particularly significant because it aims to extend Metro connectivity to densely populated neighbourhoods that have remained outside the existing network.
With consultancy appointments progressing and property acquisition nearing completion along the MGBS–Chandrayangutta corridor, officials expect the preparatory work for Phase 2 to move forward.
The immediate focus will be on finalising the consultancy contracts, completing the remaining Old City property acquisitions and advancing technical preparations for construction.
