Hyderabad Water Supply May See 10 MGD Cut In December

Hyderabad Water Supply | Hyderabad, Oct. 18: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) is planning to reduce water supply from the Manjeera source by 10 million gallons per day (MGD) from December to conserve water for peak summer demand.

The proposal comes as water levels in the Singur and Manjeera reservoirs remain below their full tank levels. Officials expect levels at both sources to decline further over the coming month.

HMWSSB is currently drawing 71 MGD from Singur against an allocation of 75 MGD. It is also drawing 44 MGD from Manjeera against its scheduled 45 MGD.

Singur’s water level stood at 1,689 feet against a full tank level of 1,717 feet. Manjeera was at 1,642 feet, compared with its full tank level of 1,651 feet.

The Manjeera network supplies several areas across western, northwestern and northern Hyderabad. These include Kukatpally, KPHB Colony, Miyapur, Chanda Nagar, Ameerpet, SR Nagar, Sanath Nagar and parts of Begumpet.

The network also serves Patancheru, Lingampally, Beeramguda, Ameenpur, Bowenpally, Alwal and Secunderabad Cantonment, along with industrial areas and defence establishments.

A senior HMWSSB official said resident welfare associations and major institutions had been advised to use alternative water sources where available. These include rainwater harvesting systems developed by local communities and institutions.

The Water Board has operated two pumps at emergency pumping stations since the last week of September. Officials said more pumps would be deployed as reservoir levels decline.

The proposed reduction is intended to conserve water ahead of summer. HMWSSB has not specified how the planned cut would affect supply schedules in individual localities.
