Hyderabad, Oct. 19: Telangana’s food safety wing, TG SAFE, has urged consumers to exercise caution when buying pheni, khara and other snacks ahead of Dasara. The advisory follows inspections that reportedly found unhygienic preparation conditions, labelling violations and suspected adulteration.
Officials have advised consumers to buy sweets and traditional snacks only from licensed establishments. They have also urged the public to check product freshness and avoid food stored in unhygienic conditions.
TG SAFE Inspections Find Food Safety Violations
On October 8, officials inspected 12 pheni and khara manufacturing units in the CURE area. The drive resulted in action against several establishments.
Officials seized 1,950 kg of pheni worth Rs 2.30 lakh over labelling violations and quality concerns. They collected 12 samples for testing over suspected adulteration and discarded contaminated food. Some establishments faced licence suspensions, while units operating without valid licences were ordered to shut down.
In a separate inspection on September 16, Balaji Pheni and Namkeen in LB Nagar faced action over unhygienic food preparation conditions.
TG SAFE has advised consumers to check packaging, manufacturing and expiry dates, ingredient lists and mandatory labels before purchasing packaged food. Consumers should avoid products with unusual smells, discolouration or visible signs of contamination.
Officials have also warned against buying unpackaged snacks from unhygienic premises and stressed the need for food businesses to follow safety and hygiene standards.
