Telangana Ration Shops | Hyderabad, Oct 20 (Maxim News): The Telangana government is reportedly planning to distribute subsidised essential goods through ration shops to ease the price burden on people during El Niño.

The Revanth Reddy government is said to be considering a scheme on the lines of Amma Hastham, which was introduced in 2013.

Under the proposal, ration shops would supply items such as red gram dal, wheat, palm oil, sugar, tamarind, chilli powder, turmeric, salt and atta at subsidised prices. Prices of groceries and vegetables have risen, which has increased household budgets. The government is preparing for this to help poor families, the source says.

Fine rice prices have gone up sharply in the Telugu states because of El Niño, according to the source. A 26-kg bag that cost ₹1,800 earlier now sells for up to ₹2,200. Rice is being sold at ₹70 to ₹90 a kilo. Traders say the price may cross ₹100 soon.

Lack of rain has reduced the area under fine paddy, which has affected prices. The free ration rice has given common people some relief.

The weather department has warned that El Niño’s effect could be severe from October to December, with high temperatures. The source says the impact may last until March next year, and that drought conditions could follow because of poor rain.

The government has prepared a special action plan and decided to run awareness programmes on saving water. It has also formed a Cabinet sub-committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka. The committee has given several suggestions and advice.
