Hyderabad, Oct 27: Telangana BJP MLA Paidi Rakesh Reddy has challenged the Congress government over the proposed Tummidihatti irrigation project, declaring that he would resign from his MLA post if the government lays the foundation stone for the project.
Rakesh Reddy made the remarks during a television debate, accusing the Congress government of creating publicity around Tummidihatti without presenting a clear and practical plan for its implementation. He claimed the project would not materialise and questioned the government’s intentions.
“If they have the courage, let them lay the foundation stone for the Tummidihatti project. If they do, I will immediately resign from my MLA post,” he said.
What Is the Latest Status of the Tummidihatti Project?
The project was among the issues discussed during a meeting between a Telangana delegation led by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai.
The discussions focused on the proposed barrage at Tummidihatti, including water availability, land submergence in Maharashtra, compensation for affected farmers, and the technical and environmental clearances required for the project.

One of the key points under discussion was Telangana’s proposal to increase the barrage height to 152 metres, compared with the previously agreed height of 148 metres. The implications of the proposed change, including its impact on land and water availability, remain important considerations in moving the project forward.
The meeting indicates that discussions between the two states are continuing. However, the available details do not establish that all necessary approvals have been secured or that construction is ready to begin.
Why Is Paidi Rakesh Reddy Challenging the Congress Government?
Rakesh Reddy alleged that the Congress government was using discussions with Maharashtra for political publicity rather than advancing the project through a concrete implementation roadmap.
He questioned whether the talks would lead to actual construction and challenged the government to demonstrate its commitment by laying the foundation stone.
His resignation challenge has intensified the political debate surrounding Tummidihatti However, his statements represent the BJP MLA’s political position and do not, by themselves, determine the project’s feasibility or future.
What Are the Main Issues Holding Up the Project?
The discussions highlighted several significant considerations: the availability of water, the proposed barrage height, the extent of land that could be submerged in Maharashtra, compensation for affected farmers, and the technical and environmental clearances required.
The resolution of these issues, along with any necessary inter-state agreements and formal approvals, will be crucial to determining the project’s next steps.
For now, the Tummidi Hatti project remains the subject of discussions between the Telangana and Maharashtra governments, while Rakesh Reddy’s challenge has added a fresh political dimension to the issue. The project’s actual progress will depend on the decisions, clearances and implementation steps that follow. (Maxim News)
