Hyderabad, Nov 7 (Maxim News): Hyderabad Police have warned people against fake WhatsApp messages claiming Paytm is offering a ₹1,000 Diwali gift. Cybercriminals are using the festive offer to lure unsuspecting users into fraudulent links.
The misleading messages urge recipients to click a link and claim the supposed cash reward immediately. Fraudsters also circulate messages such as, “I thought it was fake, but I actually received ₹1,000. You should try it too.”
These claims aim to make the offer appear genuine and encourage more people to click the links.
Sajjanar Urges People to Stay Alert
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar cautioned citizens against falling for such deceptive offers. He said cybercriminals often exploit festive occasions and excitement surrounding special offers to cheat people.
People should avoid clicking suspicious links or sharing bank account details, ATM PINs, OTPs, passwords or other personal information on unverified websites.
He also advised citizens not to forward such messages to friends and family without checking their authenticity.
Police urged people to verify promotional offers through Paytm’s official website or authorised communication channels.
Citizens should immediately report suspicious messages and cyber fraud by calling the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in.
Police stressed that attractive festive offers circulated through WhatsApp are not necessarily genuine. A moment of carelessness could lead to financial losses. (Maxim News)
