Old City will turn into the another Istanbul: CM KCR

Hyderabad, Oct. 09: Karimnagar may not become a Dallas anytime soon but the Old City of Hyderabad, given time, will surely be turned into another Istanbul. This was revealed by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao in Assembly on Thursday.

Speaking during a short discussion on Palle Pragathi and Pattana Pragathi, Rao advised the Opposition to have patience while Hyderabad’s Old City would be developed into an Istanbul-like city. It would happen in a phased manner, he assured. Referring to the Lower Maniar Dam, the CM denied ever having said that he would make Karimnagar another Dallas.

“I only said that if a ropeway bridge comes up and waterways are planned downstream of the Lower Manair Dam, it would look like the iconic Tower Bridge on the Thames in London. I know Dallas is in the US. Why would I indulge in meaningless talk,” he asked. The ropeway bridge project, under progress now, is estimated to cost Rs 336 crore.

The minister said the government had spent Rs 14,880 crore in the last seven years which was over 400 times more than the Congress government’s expenditure of Rs 3,934 crore on Old City developmental works between 2004 and 2014.

“Whether the constituency belongs to ‘car’ symbol (won by TRS MLAs) or Karwan MLA, the government gives equal priority as far as developmental works are concerned. We have not discriminated against any MLA or party and won’t do so in future also,” KTR asserted.

In his 45-minute long reply on Old City development in the assembly on Monday, the minister explained the developmental works being taken up in the Old City covering seven assembly segments in Hyderabad Lok Sabha and one assembly segment (Nampally) in Secunderabad Lok Sabha seat. He replied to the issues raised by MLAs Akbaruddin Owaisi, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and T Raja Singh.
