Hyderabad, Nov. 5: Water tanker supplies have resumed across Hyderabad after the Hyderabad Water Tankers Association called off its strike. Tanker operators agreed to extract borewell water only from outside the Outer Ring Road (ORR).
HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath announced the development on Wednesday. He said association members agreed to the arrangement after discussions with HYDRAA officials.
The delegation was led by association president Chandrashekar. Operators also agreed to obtain the required permissions before extracting groundwater outside the ORR.
HYDRAA Seeks to Protect Groundwater Within ORR
HYDRAA had directed tanker operators to stop illegal groundwater extraction in densely populated areas within the ORR. The agency cited a sharp decline in groundwater levels amid inadequate rainfall linked to El Niño.
According to HYDRAA, tanker operators often prefer nearby extraction points. This reduces travel distances and fuel costs but increases pressure on local groundwater resources.

The problem is particularly significant in areas with large numbers of paying guest hostels. These include Madhapur, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Ameerpet and Ashok Nagar.

Several residential colonies and residents’ welfare associations have complained about illegal commercial groundwater extraction. They have also reported that domestic borewells are drying up.
HYDRAA said it would coordinate with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) and other departments. The coordination aims to prevent large-scale commercial groundwater exploitation in densely populated, high-demand areas.
At the same time, the agency said it would facilitate uninterrupted water supplies to commercial establishments.
The agreement is expected to restore tanker services while addressing concerns over groundwater depletion within the ORR.
