Both houses of Parliament adjourned for the day amid protests

New Delhi, July 28: The Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha were both postponed on Thursday as the members kept up their protests and yelled slogans over a variety of topics, including price hikes, the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the suspension of MPs, and the illegal liquor trade in BJP-ruled Gujarat.

Earlier in the day, the opposition led by the Congress continued to protest as proceedings in both chambers remained stopped.

Sushil Kumar Gupta, Sanjeev Kumar Pathak, and independent Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, three additional MPs from the AAP, were suspended from the Rajya Sabha on Thursday for bringing placards into the chamber and calling for a debate on the Gujarat hooch disaster.

There are now 23 Rajya Sabha MPs who have been suspended in total. Additionally suspended previously were four Lok Sabha members of the Congress.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, has been asked to apologise for allegedly insulting President Droupadi Murmu by calling her a “rashtrapatni,” according to the ruling BJP MPs.

On Thursday, Chowdhury said he realises his error and will extend an apology to the President.

The Congress also requested an apology and accused BJP MPs of physically intimidating Sonia Gandhi and engaging in “violent heckling, verbal abuse, and physical abuse.”
