Hyderabad, Sept.21 (NSS): Minister for Handlooms and Textiles KT Rama Rao has informed that the State government will start distributing the Bathukamma sarees to the beneficiary women across the State from Thursday.
He said that the Bathukamma sarees have already been dispatched to all the destinations and Ministers, legislators and other elected representatives will take part in the distribution programme in their respective areas from Thursday.
The Minister said the State government had launched the distribution of Bathukamma sarees in 2017 aimed at giving a gift to women on behalf of the State government during the festive occasion and also providing livelihood to the weavers in the State.
“About one crore women in the State are expected to receive sarees on the festive occasion of Dasara this time and the State government has spent around Rs 339.71 crore for the purpose this year. Since the commencement of the scheme, the State government distributed about 5.81 crore sarees to the women beneficiaries,” KTR said.
The Minister said the sarees have been produced in 24 designs in 10 colours and 240 thread borders, using 100 per cent polyster filament yarn. The designs were finalised after taking into consideration of the opinions of women in the State. Of the one crore sarees, around 92 lakh sarees of 6 metres length will be distributed to women across Telangana. The remaining eight lakh sarees of 9 metres length, were manufactured especially for the elderly women as per their preference, he added.
The weavers struggled for feed their families in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, but now their income has become double. Even though the State government is taking all measures to protect the textile industry by doubling the weavers’ income, the Centre has taken decisions like increased GST on textiles which are detrimental to the progress of weavers. Though the Centre is not inclined to support the weavers, the State government will take all possible measures within its purview to safeguard them,” KTR said in a release. (NSS)
