A small purchase in Afghanistan has caused a big stir there. It has even reached the point of banning trade with one country. Recently, a man in Afghanistan bought a prescription for paracetamol. These drugs are coming to Afghanistan from Pakistan. However, the pharmacist from whom the man was buying the drugs advised him to buy tablets from India. He said that Indian tablets are four times cheaper than Pakistani drugs. He also said that the quality is better. The Afghan posted the whole thing on social media. It went viral. It even reached the Taliban government.

The Taliban government in Afghanistan has been on the lookout for a long time. Afghan Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar has been saying that the quality of medicines coming from Pakistan is poor. He has asked traders to find alternatives to them. In this order, medicines from India have attracted them. With this, Afghanistan has decided to ban the trade of medicines with Pakistan and continue with India. New Delhi has already sent medicines worth $ 108 million to Kabul in the 2024-25 financial year. Reports indicate that exports worth $ 100 million will be made during the rest of 2025.

Afghanistan has previously relied on Pakistan for its healthcare. This is due to its geographical proximity to the country and the relatively low cost of medicines and other equipment. Afghanistan has very little domestic production of medicines. 85–96% of its medicines are imported. According to UN COMTRADE data from Trading Economics, Pakistan exported $186.69 million worth of medicines to Afghanistan in 2024. More than 70% of the medicines used in Afghanistan came from Pakistan before November 2025. However, there have been repeated border clashes in recent times. After that, Pakistan closed the Torkham and Chaman border crossings to Afghan traders last year. This led to the Taliban leadership imposing a complete ban on Pakistani drugs. This has led to a severe shortage of medicines in Afghanistan.

At the same time, India came to the aid of that country. It sent 73 tons of health supplies to Kabul. India has sent medicines and other supplies many times before. With this, an agreement was reached between the two countries in this regard. Indian pharma majors are not only selling medicines to Kabul. In November 2025, Indian pharma major Zydus Lifesciences also signed a $100 million MoU with Afghanistan’s Rophis International Group in Dubai. With this, India is able to provide medicines to Afghanistan at a low cost. For this reason, the country said goodbye to trade with Pakistan.(Maxim News)
