The theft took place roughly 45 years ago. A young woman walked into a small goldsmith’s shop in Ujjain, stole a gold necklace and disappeared.
Police searched for her but could not trace her. She changed her name, assumed a new identity and lived undetected for decades. The case went cold.
Then came 2026 and the 80s AI photo trend sweeping Indian social media. The trend invites users to create AI-generated images showing how they might have looked in the 1980s.
The woman, now elderly, joined in. She created an AI-generated retro photo of herself and posted it on social media as a fun nostalgic exercise.

He went to the police. An investigation followed. When questioned, the woman confessed to the theft.
A case that had remained unsolved for 45 years was finally closed — undone not by forensic science or a tipoff, but by a social media trend and an AI tool used purely for fun.
The incident highlights how AI image generation, increasingly accessible to ordinary users, can produce unintended consequences.
