AIMIM Fields Candidates For Gram Panchayat Polls

  • AIMIM focuses on gram panchayat polls across Telangana districts
  • Party backs local candidates and reviews plans for West Bengal elections

Hyderabad: The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen has fielded candidates from several districts for the upcoming Gram Panchayat elections in Telangana. The polls will take place in three phases on December 11, 14 and 17. Party sources said AIMIM aims to strengthen its hold in rural areas and widen its base at the village level. The party chose districts where it already has a presence and believes that the ground support can help its candidates.

AIMIM is focusing on Jagityal, Nizamabad, Asifabad, Adilabad, Medak, Mancherial, Nirmal and other regions. Leaders said the party wants to set its foundation in these areas with a long-term strategy. Meanwhile, the party is encouraged by the unanimous election of former GHMC corporator Najma Sultana as the sarpanch of Baswapur village in Veldurthi mandal. Party workers view this as a boost ahead of the three-phase elections.

Party sources said district presidents and local workers selected candidates after assessing their acceptance in the villages. “The district level leaders have identified candidates for the Gram Panchayat elections, the party has acknowledged their decision and is backing the candidates,” said a reliable source. The party believes that strong local teams can help it expand further into rural Telangana. Therefore, it is supporting candidates who have community backing and organisational links.

Meanwhile, AIMIM has not yet decided on its plans for the West Bengal elections expected next year. During the 2021 Assembly polls, the party contested from seven seats Malatipur, Sagardighi, Asansol Uttar, Bharatpur, Itahar, Ratua and Jalangi but did not win any. Party sources said it is too early to take a call. They said AIMIM will meet its West Bengal unit after the notification is issued. “It is too early to say whether the party will contest or not. The party will hold a meeting with the West Bengal unit after the notification is issued and then decide whether to contest or not depending on the ground situation at that point of time,” party sources said.

The party is currently concentrating on the Gram Panchayat polls and aims to push its rural outreach. The leadership believes that the coming phases will reveal how much support the organisation has built at village level across Telangana.
