About Breaking:

Breaking, also known as breakdancing, is one of the four core elements of hip-hop culture, alongside DJing, rapping, and graffiti. Originating in the 1970s in the Bronx, New York, breaking has evolved from street performance to a recognized competitive sport.

The sport gained significant visibility at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, where it attracted over a million spectators. This success influenced the International Olympic Committee to include breaking in the 2024 Summer Olympic program, a decision announced in 2020.

Rules and Judging:

In the breaking competitions, B-girls and B-boys will face off in individual dance matches, each featuring a best-of-three-round format known as a throwdown. Each dancer has up to 60 seconds per round to showcase their moves, with the opposing dancer responding in kind.

A panel of nine judges will evaluate each performance based on five criteria: technique, vocabulary, execution, musicality, and originality. Each criterion accounts for 20% of the total score. Judges will use a digital slider to score the performances in real-time, adjusting their scores to reflect the dancer’s ability to surpass the other’s record in each category.

Breaking’s inclusion in the Paris 2024 Olympics represents a thrilling expansion of the Games’ traditional boundaries, celebrating not just athleticism but also cultural expression and artistic creativity.
