Favorable Draw for Panghal

In the Round of 16, Panghal will face Zeynep Yetgil. Her half of the draw also includes Maria Prevolaraki of Greece, Ana Andreea of Romania, and Lucia Yepez Guzman of Ecuador, providing a relatively manageable path to advance.

Outstanding 2023 Season

Panghal had a stellar 2023 season, highlighted by her bronze medal at the World Championships. She also earned a silver medal at the Asian Championships in Astana, narrowly losing to Japan’s top wrestler, Akari Fujinami. Additionally, she successfully defended her U-20 world title and secured a bronze medal at the Asian Games 2023.

Training and Preparations

Since returning from Hangzhou, Panghal has focused on training rather than competing, having been exempt from India’s selection trials for the Asian Wrestling Championships and the Asian Olympic Qualifying Tournament. She has been preparing in Europe alongside Vinesh Phogat, who will also be competing at the Olympics in the 50kg category.

Challenges Ahead

While Panghal benefits from a favorable draw, she faces formidable opponents in the 53kg category. Japan’s Akari Fujinami, the reigning two-time world champion and current Asian Games gold medallist with an unbeaten streak exceeding a hundred matches, will be a significant challenge. Other top competitors include Pang Qianyu of China, Tokyo 2020 silver medallist and two-time world medallist, and Dominique Parrish of the USA, a former world champion. Additional threats come from Lucía Yépez of Ecuador, Maria Prevolaraki of Greece, Ana Andreea of Romania, and Jonna Malmgren of Sweden.
