Hyderabad: The BRS surprised many by winning the Asifabad Municipality Chairperson post during a special meeting held on Monday for the election. The result drew attention as the party secured majority support in the newly created 20 membered municipality.
BRS candidate Mengre Akash was elected as the chairperson. Meanwhile, MD Ahmed was chosen as the vice chairperson of Asifabad Municipality. The election outcome shifted the political balance in the civic body.
BRS secures majority with support from Congress councilor
The BRS succeeded in providing a majority with nine councilors of the party. In addition, Gunda Sneha, a councilor of the Congress, and ex officio member Kova Laxmi raised their hands in favor of Akash. Therefore, the BRS managed to secure the numbers required to win the Asifabad Municipality Chairperson post.
Earlier, the Congress had a strength of seven councillors. However, it failed to achieve the majority. As a result, it could not secure the chairperson post in the 20 membered municipality.
Congress factions affect prospects in chairperson election
The developments also exposed internal divisions within the Congress. Two factions, one led by former MLC Puranam Satish Kumar and the other operated by A Shyam Naik, affected the prospects of the Congress in the election.
Meanwhile, Gunda Sneha is likely to face action for not obeying the party whip and for supporting the BRS candidate. This support proved crucial in the final outcome.
The special meeting concluded with the BRS capturing the Asifabad Municipality Chairperson post. The election result marked a significant moment in the newly created civic body, as the party secured control despite the Congress holding seven councillors.
