- Balendra Shah becomes Nepal PM after RSP victory
- Nepal politics sees generational shift with Shah rise
Hyderabad, March 27: Balendra Shah has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of Nepal. President Ram Chandra Poudel made the appointment on Friday under Article 76(1) of the Constitution, according to an official statement.
Shah, who leads the parliamentary party of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, secured the position after his party achieved a sweeping victory in the recent parliamentary elections. The RSP won 182 out of 275 seats in the House of Representatives. Earlier, the party elected him as its parliamentary leader, which paved the way for his appointment as Nepal’s 47th Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, Shah is scheduled to take the oath of office at 12:34 pm at the President’s Office on Friday. The ceremony will include Hindu rituals. Seven conch players will perform Shankha Naad, while 108 Batuks will recite Swasti Shanti. At the same time, 16 Buddhist monks will chant the Ashtamangala, marking an auspicious beginning.
Shah, popularly known as Balen, is 35 years old. He is among the youngest prime ministers Nepal has seen. His rise reflects a broader generational shift in the country’s politics. A majority of newly elected lawmakers belong to younger age groups. Therefore, his leadership signals changing political trends.
Balendra Shah’s rise and election victory details
Shah entered national politics on December 28 last year. His entry is believed to have influenced voter support for the RSP. The party had declared him as its prime ministerial candidate during the campaign. It later secured a strong mandate in the March 5 parliamentary elections.
In the Jhapa-5 constituency, Shah defeated former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli by a margin of 49,614 votes. He secured 68,348 votes, while Oli received 18,734 votes. This is the highest number of votes secured by any candidate in Nepal’s parliamentary elections since 1991.
Earlier, Shah entered politics in 2022 by contesting the Kathmandu mayoral election as an independent candidate. He won and served as mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. His background in engineering shaped his approach to governance. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Kathmandu and later earned a master’s degree in Structural Engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University in India.
His academic training helped him understand infrastructure and urban development. Therefore, his tenure as mayor focused on practical governance. With his appointment as Prime Minister, attention now turns to how he will lead Nepal at the national level.
