Hyderabad: Polling is underway in Bangladesh for the 13th general elections amid a prolonged political crisis. Chief Adviser to the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, cast his vote in the capital, Dhaka, as voters across the country began choosing a new government.
Muhammad Yunus Casts Vote in Dhaka Amid Crisis
The Bangladesh general elections are taking place after a year and a half of severe political instability. The crisis began with the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League-led government in August 2024. The fall of the government followed a student movement that led to major political changes in the country.
Since then, an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has been overseeing governance. Now, with polling underway, Bangladesh is set to form a new government in Dhaka. Yunus exercised his right to vote in the capital, marking a key moment in the ongoing electoral process.
299 Parliamentary Seats, 1,981 Candidates in Fray
The elections are being held for a total of 299 parliamentary seats. As many as 1,981 candidates from different parties are contesting. Around 12.7 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes in this crucial election.
Meanwhile, the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina has been banned. Therefore, the main contest is between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance led by Shafiqur Rahman. The National Citizen Party, which played a key role in the earlier student movement, is also part of the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance.
In addition, a referendum on key constitutional reforms is being held along with the parliamentary elections. Notably, this is the first time elections are being conducted without Hasina’s Awami League party in the fray. Hasina is currently seeking refuge in India.
After the collapse of Hasina’s government, attacks targeting Hindus have been taking place in Bangladesh. Hindus have expressed concern that attacks on minorities may increase if a coalition led by the religious party Jamaat-e-Islami comes to power following these general elections.
The results of this election are expected to determine Bangladesh’s political direction after months of uncertainty and unrest.
