BC associations, parties await verdict on local body quotas
Hyderabad, Oct 15: The Telangana government’s special leave petition (SLP) on Backward Classes (BC) reservations in local body elections is listed for hearing in the Supreme Court tomorrow.

The petition challenges an interim order of the Telangana High Court that stayed GO 9, which provides 42 percent reservation for BCs in local bodies. The matter has drawn intense public attention as stakeholders await clarity on the quota policy.
The state had moved the apex court after the High Court restrained the government from implementing GO 9.

Meanwhile, the SLP was recently taken on the Supreme Court registry and has now been placed before a bench for hearing.
Therefore, the next steps on the state’s reservation framework will hinge on the outcome of the proceedings.

The government argues that its policy aims to ensure representation for BCs across local institutions.
According to the state’s legal submissions, the lawyers for the Telangana government are contending that the Supreme Court has held there is no provision in the Constitution that fixes a 50 percent cap on reservations.

Advocate General Sudarshan Reddy has cited the position of reservations in many states to support the state’s stand in the SLP.
However, the scope and applicability of these arguments will be tested when the bench hears the matter tomorrow.

Meanwhile, leaders of BC associations, major political parties, and citizens across Telangana are closely tracking the case.
They are keen to see how the Court addresses the 42 percent BC reservation in local bodies and the balance between representation and constitutional limits.

Then, depending on the interim directions or final orders, the government may need to recalibrate its approach to reservations in local elections.
Later, further steps could follow from both the administration and stakeholders once the Court sets the course.
